Cold Steel SRK (SK-5, full-size)
Published · Researched 2026-09-21
2026 lineup note: Current. This dossier covers the full-size SRK in SK-5 high-carbon steel (6 in blade) — Cold Steel's classic survival/rescue fixed blade. MSRP $80; street $56.99 (observed 2026-09-20). Not the SRK Compact (5 in), the CPM-3V version, or the San Mai / VG10 variants (see Buying traps).
Version lineage (2023–2026)
- 1990s–2010s: Carbon V era — the original SRK (Survival Rescue Knife) in Carbon V steel; hollow-ground clip point, Kraton handle.
- 2010s–2022: SK-5 standardization — Japanese SK-5 high-carbon steel became the standard SRK steel; Secure-Ex sheath.
- 2023–2026: current SK-5 SRK — unchanged; Compact and premium-steel (CPM-3V, San Mai) variants continued as separate SKUs. No redesign of the base SK-5 SRK as of Sept 2026.
Overview
The SRK is Cold Steel's "one knife for the woods" — a 6-in SK-5 clip-point blade, 5 mm thick, with a grippy Kray-Ex handle and a Secure-Ex sheath, at $56.99 street. Survival and bushcraft communities respect it as the affordable hard-use fixed blade: thick enough to baton, tough carbon steel that sharpens easily, and a price that doesn't punish abuse. The tradeoffs: SK-5 needs oil (it will rust if neglected), the hollow grind is less ideal for wood carving than a Scandi, and Cold Steel's marketing tone isn't for everyone. It's the working man's survival knife.

Community Verdict
The SRK's social standing is "the $57 knife you can beat on" — survival communities consistently recommend it as the budget hard-use fixed blade, praising the 5-mm SK-5 blade's toughness and the Kray-Ex grip in wet/cold conditions. Social searches (Sept 2026) show sustained community ownership content. The honest knocks: SK-5's rust-proneness punishes the forgetful, the hollow grind wedges in deep wood cuts compared with a Scandi, and the sheath is functional rather than refined. It's the knife people recommend when someone asks for "a fixed blade I won't cry about." No fabricated scores.
