REI Co-op Passage 55+10 Pack – Kids'
REI Co-op's current youth 65-liter backpacking pack — 55 L plus a 10 L extension collar. Substitution disclosure: this dossier replaces the planned "REI Tarn 65," which is a discontinued legacy model; the Passage 55+10 Kids' is REI's current youth 65 L offering as of 2026-09-20.
Identifiers & current-generation confirmation
- Brand / model: REI Co-op Passage 55+10 Pack – Kids'
- Current-generation confirmation (2026-09-20): Actively listed by REI at $189 as the current kids' 65 L pack.
Lineage & current lineup (2023–2026)
- Substitution note: the REI Tarn 65 appears in older references but is legacy/discontinued; it does not appear in REI's current youth lineup. The Passage 55+10 Kids' holds the ~65 L youth slot now.
- Pairs with the REI Co-op Tarn 40 Pack – Kids' (40 L) as REI's two-size youth overnight system.
- REI's 1-year satisfaction guarantee applies — the key youth-gear hedge.

Community verdict
Niche but sensible. The Passage 55+10 Kids' is bought for a specific kid: the teen who's outgrown the Tarn 40 but isn't ready for an adult 65 L. Community signal is thin (youth expedition packs aren't enthusiast content), but the logic is widely accepted in scout and family-backpacking circles: fit the torso, buy the guarantee, let them grow into the extension collar. No complaints surfaced.

Durability & warranty reality
Same story as the Tarn 40: outgrown before worn out; REI's guarantee is the warranty that matters.
Yearly history
- 2023–2024: Tarn 65 fading from current lineup; Passage line emerging as REI's pack family.
- 2025–2026: Passage 55+10 Kids' is the current youth 65 L; $189 observed 2026-09-20.
Comparisons (existing catalog rivals)
- REI Co-op Tarn 40 Pack – Kids' (this expansion): The smaller sibling. Most kids under ~12–13 should be in the 40, not the 65 — buy volume for the trip, not for growth.
- Deuter Fox 40: 40 L and more refined; the Passage is for kids who've aged out of youth-40 L capacity.
- Osprey Ace 38: Premium youth pack at lower volume; Passage wins on sheer capacity per dollar with the REI guarantee.
Care
Empty fully; spot-clean; air-dry; check buckles/zippers seasonally. Store uncompressed.
Buying traps & CPSC recalls
- No CPSC recall found (2026-09-20 search).
- Trap: 65 L tempts overpacking — a kid's knees don't care about the extension collar. Fit the load to the child, not the pack.
- Trap: don't confuse with the legacy Tarn 65 in old reviews — different pack, different fit.
Additional voices
- Scout/family-backpacking consensus: torso-fit + REI guarantee is the buying logic; no enthusiast review corpus.
