Naturehike Star River UL 2-Person Ultralight (15D)

Published · Researched 2026-09-21

VARIANT NOTE (critical): This is the Star River UL 15D — the ultralight variant — NOT the classic Star River (210T polyester / heavier, already covered elsewhere in this project). UL identifiers: 15D nylon fly, ~1.44–1.85 kg, Yuksom 8.5 mm poles, Khaki/Grey colorways, and the "expandable dual awnings" feature. If a listing shows 210T polyester or ~2.4 kg, that's the classic, not this tent.

Version lineage (2023–2026)

  • Current: Star River UL 15D — 15D silicone-coated nylon double-wall 2P, Yuksom eco-friendly 8.5 mm poles, dual-awning doors.
  • 2023–2026: Continued unchanged — Grey and Khaki colorways on naturehike.com; Amazon/Target listings current.
  • Still a smart buy? Yes — at $159 official it's one of the cheapest true-UL double-wall 2P tents from a brand name, and the 15D cut drops ~0.5 kg vs the classic.

Overview

The Star River UL takes the proven Star River double-wall 2P design and cuts it down: 15D ripstop nylon with silicone coating (vs 20D/210T on the classic), Yuksom eco-friendly 8.5 mm poles (no phosphoric/nitric acid treatment), and a bare-bones weight of 1.44 kg — 1.85 kg with stakes and bag. It's a proper double-wall with two doors, two vestibules, and the UL signature feature: both doors can be propped with trekking poles into expandable dual awnings for ventilation/shade. Modular packing splits the load between two hikers. At 1.44 kg it's firmly in ultralight territory for a double-wall 2P; the trade is thinner fabric — 15D needs more careful site selection than 20D.

Community Verdict

borderlinestore.ca (in-store measured): 1.44 kg, mesh inner keeps condensation down, "half the weight, a third of the packed size, and aluminum poles instead of fibreglass" vs entry-level tents — "if you carry your tent on your back or in a kayak, that is the whole difference." marine-deals.co.nz: "masterpiece of ultralight engineering... tailored for three-season use." addtocart/dome-tents reviews: "robust 15D Nylon fabric... spacious interior and smart storage options." naturehike.au on the UL advantages: 15D vs the standard's 20D, dual awnings, eco-friendly poles. The honest caveats: mostly-mesh inner needs a vent open on cold nights (borderlinestore's own advice); 15D fabric wants gentle handling. No fabricated scores.

Long-term durability & warranty-claim reality (enrichment — Sept 2026)

The 15D UL is newer and thinner than the classic Star River, so long-term reports are fewer — owners treat it as a careful-site tent: the silicone-coated 15D holds up to normal backpacking, but floor abrasion is the wear point (use the ground fabric footprint). Yuksom poles are standard aluminum performance. Warranty reality: no documented claim channel — naturehike.com support for direct orders, seller chat for marketplace. No organized claim data.

Version history — year by year (enrichment — Sept 2026)

  • 2023: Star River UL continued alongside the classic; Grey/Khaki on naturehike.com.
  • 2024: Continued; Amazon/Target listings current (~$144–160).
  • 2025: Continued.
  • 2026: Continued at $159 official; naturehike.au documents the UL-vs-standard differences (15D, dual awnings, Yuksom poles).

Head-to-head vs closest rivals (enrichment — Sept 2026)

  • vs classic Star River (210T): ~2.4 kg and ~$119 vs 1.44 kg and $159. The classic is tougher and cheaper; the UL is the backpacker's version. If you don't count grams, save $40.
  • vs Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 (/library/gear/budget-brands/naturehike-cloud-peak-2/): the Cloud Peak 2 is 4-season (~2.5 kg, $229). The Star River UL is the 3-season UL double-wall (1.44 kg, $159) — lighter, cheaper, less weather capability.
  • vs Naturehike Vik 1P (/library/gear/budget-brands/naturehike-vik-1/): the Vik 1P is the single-wall solo (~1.1 kg, ~$120). The Star River UL adds a second person and double-wall comfort for ~0.3 kg more.
  • vs MSR Hubba Hubba 2 (/library/gear/tents-shelters/msr-hubba-hubba-2/): the established benchmark at ~4× the price. The Star River UL matches the weight class and layout; the Hubba Hubba wins on refinement and support network.

Care & maintenance (enrichment — Sept 2026)

Pitch taut so the fly never touches the inner (borderlinestore's core advice); leave a vent open on cold nights. 15D fabric: choose ground carefully, always use a groundsheet. Seam-seal check yearly with silicone sealer. Dry fully before storage; store loose in a cool, dry place.

Buying traps (enrichment — Sept 2026)

  • The 210T trap: listings mixing "Star River" and "Star River UL" are everywhere — verify 15D nylon and 1.44 kg before buying. The $119 listing is the classic.
  • Season claims: mostly marketed as 3-season; one reseller's datasheet says 4-season (UNVERIFIED/variant-dependent). Treat it as 3-season.
  • Weight claims: 1.44 kg is tent+fly+poles only; real carry is ~1.85 kg with stakes and bag.
  • Awning mode: needs your own trekking poles, stakes, and guylines — not included.

Community Verdict — additional voices (enrichment — Sept 2026)

naturehike.com's hosted Star River 2 review (classic, but design DNA): "a lot closer to a 'true' 2-man offering than most other tents" — two real doors/vestibules vs the Cloud Up's one. addtocart's UL review: "lightweight materials make it easy to carry... large door openings and breathable mesh inner." The consistent UL-specific note: it shares the Star River's genuinely 2-person floor, unlike narrower budget 2Ps. No fabricated scores.
